UWS Graduate the New Scriever at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum

University of the West of Scotland graduate Simon Lamb has taken over the role of Scriever (the writer-in-residence) at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayrshire. Simon’s first poem as Scriever was Sonnet: Brig o’ Doon. His second was Wintersang, a versioning into Scots of a song lyric from Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost. As Burns Season is in full swing, Simon has been busy as with a tour of primary schools to share his popular “Lamb o’ Shanter” experience: a workshop based on Burns’s Tam o’ Shanter — as you’ve never seen it before. Graduate and WWE Referee Becomes First Scot to Ref a Pro Match Abroad

UWS (University of the West of Scotland) graduate Thomas Kearins has made history as the first Scot to referee a professional match abroad. Thomas, who studied the BA (Hons) Marketing programme at UWS, was also the first Scot to referee for WWE, the largest wrestling promotion in the world, in 2018 a month after graduating in Paisley. A referee from the age of 14, Thomas has now become the first Scot to referee a pro match abroad when he officiated at the ICW World Heavyweight Title match between Leyton Buzzard, Ricky Barcelo and Feyyaz Aguila at Lucha Libre Barcelona, in Spain on Saturday 14 January 2023. A number of deals have been struck and discussions progressed following a successful Scottish Investment and Trade Mission organised by University of the West of Scotland (UWS) Alumni to the Caribbean island of Barbados. Organised by alumna Jo Smith, founder of the Renfrewshire Business Network, in collaboration with alumnus Shane Thomas, Invest Barbados’ representative in Scotland and Department for International Trade Scotland (DIT), the mission’s aim is to promote the opportunities available and highlight the success of Scottish companies who have invested on the island. The first trade mission organised by Jo and Shane took place in November 2021. Accounting Graduate Awarded OBE in the New Year Honours List

Angela Noon, University of the West of Scotland graduate and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Royal Mail, has received an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the New Year Honours list for services to Further Education. Angela, who graduated from University of Paisley (now UWS Paisley Campus) in 1996 with a BA Accounting, said: “Delighted to receive the OBE in His Majesty, the Kings New Year honours list. It truly is humbling to be granted this recognition. Thanks to all the colleagues at the Department for Education and other institutions that have supported me.
