Former University Staff Group Founding Members Stand Down after 25 Years

A former staff group recently saw two of its founding members stand down after 25 years of organising lunches and get togethers for former employees of the university. The Paisley Academic Lunch Society, or PALS as it’s better known, is the name adopted by a group of retired members of staff. The group has origins going back to 1997 when a small number of former staff from the then University of Paisley, including John Wylie MBE, Professor Willie McEwan OBE, Harry Adams, George Haig and Samuel Monaghan, started to meet on a regular basis for lunch. Word spread of the retired staff group lunches and very quickly the membership grew. University of the West of Scotland’s (UWS) long standing Canadian partner, Harris Institute, played host recently to an alumni event at its base in Toronto. A University of the West of Scotland (UWS) graduate has been named among 40 high-achieving pathologists, pathology residents, and medical laboratory professionals under age 40 in the prestigious American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) 2024 40 Under Forty list. UWS Academic and Alumna Named Engineering ‘Trailblazer’

An internationally-respected academic and graduate from University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has been named as a winner of the Top 50 Women in Engineering (WE50) awards. Dr Michele Cano – Head of the Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences at UWS – is a mechanical and manufacturing engineer, with over 30-years of experience. Michele began her career in shipbuilding, before moving to the higher education sector; eventually joining the University of Paisley – UWS’s predecessor institution – in 1993, as a lecturer in Quality Engineering. She graduated with a PhD in Lean Manufacturing in 2016 from UWS. Throughout her academic career, she has placed a heavy focus on growing the diversity of the sector. University of the West of Scotland (UWS) graduate Rebecca Macdonald has always had an interest in STEM subjects all through her school days, so a career in engineering was never in doubt. “I was drawn to engineering after years in the Sea Cadets, where I was able to attend expand on my interest by attending engineering courses at HMS Gannet in Prestwick,” commented Rebecca. Malaysia Airports appoints graduate as COO

Malaysia Airports has appointed University of the West of Scotland (UWS) alumnus, Gordon Stewart, as the organisation’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Airport Operations Malaysia. Gordon, who graduated from Paisley College (now UWS Paisley Campus) with an honours degree in Industrial Engineering with Manufacturing Systems, has 33 years of experience in multiple industries including aviation, rail and information technology.
