Chinese graduate reflects on his time studying chemistry and waste management at UWS

As many of our graduates and friends celebrate the Chinese New Year with their families, MSc Waste Management graduate Fei Guo reflects on his time leaving home in China to study BSc chemistry in Paisley at University of the West of Scotland. Fei, or better known as Jasper, first came to Paisley Campus of the University in 2005 from China to study BSc Chemistry. Java champion and alumnus visits Paisley Campus

The School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences welcomed Computing Science graduate Alan Williamson back to Paisley Campus on Wednesday 5 December 2018 to meet students and staff and see some of the research work the school is involved in. Alan, who graduated from the Paisley Campus in 1994, has published a number of books in the Java space covering Enterprise Java, Servlets, JavaMail and database access. He also served in the role of Editor-in-Chief for Java Developers Journal, one of the largest magazines in the space with a 200k monthly circulation. UWS Honorary Doctorate Award for Dr Alan Goodall

Dr Alan Goodall, who is known globally for his scientific research into the behavioural ecology and conservation of rare mountain gorillas in Central Africa, received an Honorary Doctorate from UWS at its graduation ceremony on Wednesday 4th July at Paisley Abbey. Dr Goodall has close links with UWS and was a lecturer in environmental biology at the former Paisley College of Technology (now UWS) from 1974-1990. Conducting his research at the Karisoke Research Centre in Rwanda, where he was Director between 1987-1989 (during a sabbatical from the Paisley College of Technology), and the Kahuzi-Biega National Park in Zaire, his work has been extensively documented, including in his book ‘The Wandering Gorillas’. Alumni Profile: David Smith Manufacturing Systems Engineering Graduate

David is Asset Management Specialist for Energy & Utilities (E&U) at IBM in New York and graduated from the BEng (Hons) Manufacturing Systems Engineering degree programme in 1995. Tell us about your time at the University I chose UWS for three reasons. Firstly, it was a manageable size: big enough to offer a broad university experience and meet interesting people, and not so big that I might get ‘lost’ in the system. Secondly, the degree was a ‘thin sandwich’ structure, allowing me to alternate work and study. (That helped enormously with finance, and also gaining competitive advantage in the form of experience by the time I would graduate.) Thirdly, UWS had some flagship employers who were known to routinely hire UWS graduates, and these were firms I was attracted to. ...
