A University of the West of Scotland (UWS) nursing graduate is focusing on supporting wellbeing with the launch of a business that uses an immersive sound experience to put clients into a calm and meditative state.

Jade Swan, who graduated from UWS Ayr Campus with a BSc in Mental Health Nursing, is offering sound frequency therapy or soundbaths to offer the brain time to rest. “Having busy lives we’re often in our fight or flight response in a high state of alert,” said Jade. “Many people struggle with busy brains and struggle to sleep, soundbath allows the brain to shift into a meditative state which many people struggle to do.”
A soundbath is an immersive sound experience that uses different vibrations and frequencies via crystal sound bowls and other instruments to allow clients to relax into a calm and meditative state.
Working in the NHS Jade, alongside Mum Liz who is also a mental health nurse dementia specialist, know only too well how stressful life can be and set up their business Serene Tranquility Soundbaths to offer a service that reduces feelings of stress and anxiety.
“We are passionate about mental health and wellbeing and have been advocates for soundbath as a therapy for many years. It is something a lot of people haven’t tried for their mental health but the results we’ve had are amazing. We offer luxury soundbaths in small classes of ten, renting out local community centres to ensure we are giving back something to our community.”
The duo have also been hosting staff wellbeing sessions across care homes for staff to relax and de-stress as Liz has worked in the care home sector for the majority of her nursing career and is passionate about this type of nursing.
Talking about her time studying at UWS Jade explained how she endured a very difficult period personally: “Six weeks before I was due to start my access to nursing course, I had a spinal cord injury and was left with cauda equina syndrome. Following emergency surgery, it was unclear at that point if I would even be able to walk again let alone become a nurse. With hard work and dedication I am proud to be where I am today and thanks to the mental health nurse at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow who spurred me on and gave me hope at a really dark time.”
UWS supported me through my studies and gave me a thriving chance in securing my degree. I am proud now to be able to serve my community and improve the mental health and wellbeing of others facing hard times.”
