Basketball Star Featuring in BBC Documentary

A UWS Sport graduate has been featuring in Ballers: Ball or Nothing, a BBC documentary following Caledonia Gladiators – Scotland’s only professional Basketball team – as they try and break a 20 year drought of winning a trophy.

UWS graduate and team captain, Jonny Bunyan, is a pivotal figure in the team’s achievements during his remarkable journey with Caledonia Gladiators now in his 12th season. The 31-year-old fan favourite is also a seasoned international, representing Scotland at two Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022.

Sean Skelly, Head of Men’s Basketball, and another UWS graduate who features heavily in the series, said: “The documentary is a fantastic showpiece for the club over an amazing 12 months. I think it’s fantastic for the fans to get a glimpse at the behind-the-scenes workings.”

Starting during the summer of 2022, when the club were named the Glasgow Rocks, the story builds around the introduction of new owners, Steve and Alison Timoney, as the franchise rebranded to the Caledonia Gladiators.

The story explores the never-before-seen look at professional basketball in the UK, including players moving to Scotland, away from families, challenges on and off the court, and some of the franchise’s top names balancing other work and university commitments.
