A Social Work graduate from University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has been awarded the prestigious title of Scotland’s Social Worker of the Year 2023.

Jean Ritchie, who completed a BA (Hons) in Social Work at University of Paisley (now UWS Paisley Campus) in 2004, received the award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Adult Support & Protection (ASP) and her advocacy for the importance of Carers and those with lived experience of ASP.

My experience studying at UWS provided me with excellent theory and knowledge regarding Social Work practice, plus a valuable opportunity to complete two fabulous social work placements which enabled me to tie everything together and put my knowledge into practice. The lecturers were supportive and offered their own experience and knowledge enhancing my overall understanding in regard to effective Social Work Practice.

Leaving school at 16 with no formal qualifications, Jean’s career path took a change in direction following the death of her mother prompting her to pursue formal qualifications at college as a mature student, before applying to study a degree in Social Work at UWS.

An Adult Support & Protection Social Worker at East Renfrewshire HSCP, Jean began her 20-year career at North Ayrshire Council following graduation and has gone on to work at various local authorities including West Dunbartonshire Council & Renfrewshire Council.

Jean also gives back to the University by returning to campus every year to share her knowledge and experience with students on the ‘Supporting Families’ module.

Jean commented: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the past 20 years since qualifying and continue to hold a passion for challenging social injustice and am very proud to be in a position where I can influence and empower people to improve their circumstances and ultimately achieve their personal goals.”

Alison Bavidge National Director, Scottish Association for Social Work, who presented the Social Worker of the Year award, commented: “We need people who are compassionate and curious, to help and support people.”

The Scottish Social Services Awards have been celebrating individuals and organisations who demonstrate best practice in the social services sector since 2017.
