What started out as an honours year passion project at University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has developed into a full-time job for graduate Iaian Sands.
I had such a good experience during my time with UWS, I wanted to reach out and tell a bit of my story so far.
Iaian Sands, BA (Hons) Filmmaking & Screenwriting 2018
Iaian, who graduated with a first-class honours degree in Filmmaking & Screenwriting in his hometown of Ayr, is now Archive Video Producer for Rangers Football Club doing a job he loves.
Iaian told us: “Since I was getting a fair bit of freelance work in football at the time during my honours year, I had a real focus on football for my studies. My honours year creative project was a film on the history of Ayr United FC and my dissertation was on the football documentary.”
TheTeam From The Auld Toon featured interviews with experts such as official club historian and author Duncan Carmichael and lifelong fan Jim Mechan, and very quickly became a huge hit among supporters.
Shortly after graduating in 2018, Iaian started working for Rangers Football Club as a videographer, leaving in 2021 to take up a videographer role with the NHS before being asked back to Rangers a year later to produce the films for the club’s new museum.
Having completed that almost year-long project for Rangers FC, Iaian now solely focuses on producing historical films for the club, some feature-length, some short.
Recently he collaborated with a colleague to create a film on the history of women’s football, which included an interview with UWS alumna and former professional footballer Amy Mcdonald and featured UWS former student Erin Cuthbert.
“It was a pleasure to work on this film with Stuart Govan and the team, and a great experience to speak with so many experts and players in the women’s game” commented Iaian.
Last month, Rangers FC hosted an event at Edmiston house to premiere a documentary he created on Archibald Leitch titled Building British Football.
