University of the West of Scotland (UWS) graduate Cameron MacAllister tells us how the flexibility of the course allowed him to harness his creativity beyond the realms of music.
Cameron, who is Senior Communications and External Affairs Manager at Glasgow Warriors, graduated from the BA (Hons) Commercial Music degree at UWS with a first-class honours in July 2011.
A keen rugby fan all his life, initially he never thought there would be a career path in sport for him.
Remembering his time at UWS Ayr Campus Cameron said: “I played for the local rugby team Ayr Rugby Club, I looked for ways to connect music and sport together, and what I learned in the commercial music course was networking is absolutely key.”
“That’s what I was doing in my fourth year… and one of the opportunities that came my way was to progress in communications in sport.
“The course lecturers were excellent – in particular Allan McCusker Thompson, who was my was my fourth year advisor/mentor, really helped me achieve my degree in that final year.”
Taking up an intern role at Glasgow Warriors in 2010 proved pivotal for Cameron. He gained invaluable experience assisting the media manager and creating play-by-play posts for Twitter, organising post-match interviews and writing game reports for the website, which led to a full-time communications role at Scottish Rugby.
Moving from Scottish Rugby, as Media Manager, in 2015 to World Curling Federation saw Cameron overseeing all communications and media relations activity for the international Olympic and Paralympic winter sport of curling. However, after 5 years the pull of rugby drew Cameron back to where it began for him.
“You have to go and try things!” added Cameron “If you try different things… you just don’t know what opportunities are going to come your way.”
Glasgow Warriors compete in the BTK United Rugby Championship and the Champions Cup and play their matches at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.
