A University of the West of Scotland (UWS) graduate has been named among 40 high-achieving pathologists, pathology residents, and medical laboratory professionals under age 40 in the prestigious American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) 2024 40 Under Forty list.
Alumnus Prince Kenneth Homiah, who graduated from the MSc in Quality Management programme at UWS with Distinction in 2019, commented: “I’m delighted to announce that I’ve been honoured by the American Society for Clinical Pathology as a 40 Under Forty honouree for 2024. Thank you UWS for the knowledge and confidence you empowered me with.”
ASCP’s 40 Under Forty program shines the spotlight on 40 highly accomplished pathologists, pathology residents, and laboratory professionals under age 40 who have made significant contributions to the profession and stand out as the future of laboratory leadership.
Laboratory manager at the GPHA Hospital in Takoradi, Ghana, Prince is a certified medical laboratory scientist and a haematology technologist. He’s also a member of American Society for Quality, a certified quality engineer, and a Six Sigma Green Belt. He holds a bachelor’s degree in laboratory science from the University of Ghana and a master’s degree in quality management from UWS.
“My experience with UWS was exceptional,” said Prince. “Dr Michelle Cano and Dr Evi Viza were inspirational mentors. Dr Evi Viza, my dissertation supervisor, consistently made time for me and responded promptly to my emails.
“As one of the few Ghanaian students who studied through the partnership between UWS and Ghana Communication Technology University, I benefited from the well-structured and comprehensive Master’s in Quality Management program, which prepared me for future success.
“I highly recommend UWS to students seeking a world-class education that will enhance their career prospects.”
Prince is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of scientists, organises community outreach programs and is a strong advocate for quality and standards in laboratory services, especially in under-resourced settings.
He also develops simple quality management tools using Excel for use in under-resourced settings. Driven by his personal experience as a sickle cell disease sufferer, he seeks to address the question of why it took over 20 years to confirm his condition.
“ASCP’s 40 Under Forty program is an opportunity to recognize the next generation of pathology and medical laboratory leaders from around the globe,” said ASCP President Robert Goulart, MD, MASCP.
“By providing support and encouragement to these young professionals, we aim to strengthen the medical laboratory workforce during this period of historic change in healthcare delivery. We are very fortunate to have such a talented group of individuals – they will help to shape the future of patient care.”
