A former University of the West of Scotland (UWS) student has won a Paralympic gold medal in individual boccia in Paris.
Stephen McGuire who studied at Bell College (now UWS Lanarkshire Campus) defeated Colombia’s Edilson Chica 8-5 to win the BC4 men’s individual title at the South Paris Arena.
The 40-year-old from Bellshill, who had previously finished fourth on three occasions in competitions at Paralympic Games at London 2012 and Rio 2016, came to the Paris Games following a lengthy period of injury.
“Twenty years of never giving up led to this incredible moment at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. This was my 4th games and having finished 4th on 3 occasions, the dream became a reality, delivering a Gold medal for Paralympics GB.
“Thanks to everyone who has helped me on this crazy long journey. So many to mention but I’ll hopefully catch up with you all soon. Special thanks goes to my coach who never stopped believing in the process over 10+ years working together and all my team mates, staff at Boccia UK who continue to push forward each day, as well as family and friends who have been on the journey with me.”
Stephen was joined at the Paralympic Games in Paris by two other alumni; Martin Perry and Kayleigh Haggo.
