UWS graduate and former team captain, Jonny Bunyan, has been appointed Head Coach of the Caledonia Gladiators men’s basketball team.
BSc (Hons) Sport Development graduate Jonny was a pivotal figure in the team’s achievements during his career with Caledonia Gladiators and was awarded a testimonial last summer for his service to the club.
The club said: “We are pleased to announce that Jonny Bunyan has been appointed as Head Coach of the men’s team.
“Jonny’s long-standing experience within the club makes him well-placed to guide the team through this period of transition.
“The former point guard steps up from his current role as Club Development Officer and will lead a coaching team that will provide the necessary stability and focus as we look to move forward both on and off the court.”
An international who represented Scotland at two Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022, he played with the Gladiators, formerly known as Glasgow Rocks, for 13 seasons before moving to his hometown team Falkirk Fury in January 2024.
The highlight of his time at the Gladiators came in March 2023 when Jonny captained the side that beat Cheshire Phoenix in the British Basketball League (BBL) Trophy Final – becoming the first side in 20 years to lift silverware.
Another UWS graduate and Texas native Prince Onwas, also marked his name in the history books with the Gladiators that night by delivering the game-winning assist to David Sloan’s winning shot in the dying seconds of the game in front of 8,000 fans in Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.
