A University of the West of Scotland (UWS) graduate has been named number 9 in the Top 30 Franchise Executives Report that showcases exceptional individual performance by Australia’s franchisor professionals.
UWS Computer Animation graduate John McDougall is the Marketing and AI Manager at Think Water, an international franchise group made up of independent locally owned and operated businesses located throughout Australia and New Zealand who specialise in delivering innovative and sustainable irrigation, pumping, filtration and water treatment solutions.
John’s recent focus has been on driving commercial success through the development and implementation of a pioneering AI solution.

John commented: “I’m grateful (and very excited!) to be listed in this year’s Top 30 Franchise Executives Report! It’s rewarding to see Think Water mentioned alongside some of Australia’s biggest franchise brands in the 2025 report – another proud moment for our network!
“On a personal note, being named in the Top 10 was a very surprising and humbling highlight!”
The annual report highlights the innovators, mentors, and leaders driving real results and raising the bar across the sector. From rising stars to seasoned professionals, it puts a spotlight on the individuals setting new benchmarks in franchising success.
Reflecting on his career journey John said: “My time at UWS played a huge part in preparing me for the challenges and opportunities I’ve faced since graduating. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, helping me build confidence in public speaking and strengthening my time management skills — both of which have been essential in my career.”
“The BSc Computer Networking with Animation course also sparked a real passion for multimedia and advertising, which has shaped the direction of my work in marketing and AI,” continued John.
“Most importantly, university taught me how to adapt to new environments and think creatively under pressure, which has been invaluable in the fast-paced world of franchising and tech.
“I am grateful for my time at University of the West of Scotland, and for the lecturers and peers who not only supported me, but pushed me to grow, think differently, and step beyond my comfort zone.”
Following graduation from the Paisley Campus in 2014, John moved to Australia joining Vodafone Business Centre in the Gold Coast where he quickly moved up through various roles to become Business Development Manager, and latterly Senior Marketing & Business Specialist, before joining Think Water in 2022.
In 2024, he implemented Drip AI, Australia’s first custom-built AI solution for the irrigation industry.
Pat Mulcahy, Head of Network Development at Think Water, commented on John’s inclusion in the report: “His leadership in developing Drip AI has transformed our industry, driving commercial success, operational efficiency, and innovation. His vision for AI-driven training, marketing, and supplier relations showcases exceptional foresight and impact.”
