Alumnus Appointed Deputy Chief Executive at NHS GGC

A University of the West of Scotland (UWS) business graduate has been appointed as Deputy Chief Executive for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC).

UWS graduate William Edwards was appointed as Deputy Chief Executive in May 2025 having held the role of Chief Operating Officer from January 2022.

Welcoming the appointment, Professor Jann Gardner, Chief Executive, said: “I would like to congratulate William on his appointment. His role will be pivotal as we embark on a new chapter with our bold programme, The GGC Way Forward – Transforming Together. This initiative is set to drive comprehensive system-wide reform, and William’s leadership will be instrumental in supporting this transformation.

William will play a crucial part in reinforcing our commitment to working together to deliver the best care possible for our patients. Furthermore, he will help foster a more collaborative environment that actively listens to and engages with our staff, shaping policies and addressing some of the major challenges facing NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

I look forward to working closely with him as we strive to achieve our goals and make a positive impact on our healthcare system.

William has held leadership roles at both local and national level since joining the NHS in June 1999 following his graduation from the then University of Paisley (now UWS), with a degree in Business & Management.

Prior to his role as Chief Operating Officer, he was Director of eHealth and Digital services at NHS GGC, where he led the development of an ambitious digital strategy to make health and care services ‘digital as usual’ and was awarded the Digital Leader Award at the Holyrood Connect Digital Health and Care Awards 2019.
